Ducks in the Garden
Ducks in the Garden is a short a cappella piece based on a very silly poem by Will T. Laughlin. It was premiered in June, 2012 by the San Francisco Choral Artists, Magen Solomon, Artistic Director. Hear the work performed in the amusing video embedded above.
Morning comes —
The day is fine;
Ducks in the garden
Standing in line.Noontime comes —
Sun overhead;
Ducks in the garden
Buttering bread.Evening comes —
Shadows grow long;
Ducks in the garden
Playing mah-jongg.Nighttime comes —
Full moon shining;
Ducks in the garden
Pleasantly dining
(As only ducks can)
On Peking Man.

When I first discovered Charles Bernstein’s beautiful poem, I knew immediately that I wanted to set it for men’s chorus. The poem expresses so much within a brief, 4-verse form. I set out to use harmony to color the text’s rich imagery while honoring the poem’s lyrical and repetitive nature in the melody. The surprising […] More info & view score »

It can be performed as a general-purpose anthem or during the […] More info & view score »

A traditional Catalan Christmas song dating from the 16th Century. Various versions of the Catalan text exist, including two verses included here that seem to have little to do with Christmas. “Fum”is the Catalan word for smoke, but here most likely suggests the strumming of a guitar or perhaps drum beats. A phonetic (for English-speakers) […] More info & view score »

“Thou God” is the title of a text by Dag Hammarskjöld, Secretary-general of the United Nations from 1953 to 1961.
