This setting of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ stately, mixed-meter hymn tune uses shimmering tone clusters to depict the textual themes of light and fire in the first two verses. The third verse emphasizes themes of humility and service in an earthy a cappella setting, after which a building organ interlude leads into a towering and majestic […]

Merriam-Webster.com defines copypasta as “data (such as a block of text) that has been copied and spread widely online.” This piece, Copypasta, is a setting of three of my favorite text memes that originated on Tumblr. The first movement, Spiders Georg, illustrates the statistical concept of outliers using the example of an arachnid-eating recluse. The […]

Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Hope is the thing with feathers” is one of the most beloved among her corpus of work, and for good reason. This setting is an expression of the poem’s sweetness as well as its dramatic intensity, with a “tune without the words” established early in the piece that returns after the harrowing […]

Charles Wesley’s hymn text based on the story of Jacob wrestling with the angel depicts a deeply human struggle for truth and understanding. This a cappella setting of the text grows with the building intensity of Jacob’s determination, finally breaking into the joy of revelation and reassurance in the final verse.

The bass section plays a featured role in this setting of the wistful and evocative poetry of Sadakichi Hartmann. A barcarolle-style accompaniment and layered, drifting harmonies express the themes of ocean waves, drifting ships, and nostalgia for things past.

The cumulative rhyme, “The House that Jack Built” follows a series of connected objects, animals, and people, from the titular house through to an unrelated “farmer sowing his corn.” This setting features a light, skipping melody that slows down periodically to linger on the developing romance between the “maiden all forlorn” and the “man all […]

Emily Dickinson’s short and quippy poem, “To make a prairie” has a great depth of meaning despite its brevity, in its portrayal of the power of imagination. This setting captures the broad sweep of the prairie landscape in its bright opening chords, and the dreamy state of imagnining in a shimmering but intensifying middle section, […]
